Pack soars past Falcons

The Pam Pack put on an offensive display on Thursday as it exploded for a 9-0 win over Coastal Conference rival South Central.

Washington senior Beth Batchelor led the attack as she netted three goals, while Christian Heggie scored twice and Rachel Thompson, Harley Hudson, Paige Ingalls and Alana Jefferson each scored once.

The win ups the Pam Pack’s record to 6-5 (4-3) and puts them in a tie for fourth place in the conference with D.H. Conley, who it will play tonight on the road.

“We were hoping to work on a couple of things tonight and gain a little momentum going into (today’s game) against Conley,” Washington coach Jimmy Kozuch said. “We have been working pretty hard at practice and it translated into tonight’s game.”

Among several positives Wednesday night, perhaps the most significant one was the diversity of the Pack scoring attack.

“It was an amazing feat for us. Usually we have only one or two girls score goals, but to have six score; that will boost our team confidence,” Kozuch said. “Hopefully it carries over to our game against Conley.”

Batchelor, who received a scholarship to play soccer at East Carolina, padded her Washington High School record for most career goals with three to bring the total 97.

“For Beth, three goals is just another day for her,” Kozuch joked. “She played extremely hard, got her goals and set up a couple of the other girls.”

Kozuch also praised the effort of Heggie.

“Christian Heggie is a freshman this year and she is a really good player,” Kozuch said. “She works hard and is getting better with each game.”

While the Pam Pack offense was on fire, the defense stonewalled South Central, keeping the Falcons winless in the Coastal Conference by not allowing a shot on goal the entire game.

“The defense has been working hard,” Kozuch said. “We’ve had a rough go this season and we have been making some moves and switching some players up, and tonight they had their act together and denied the South Central attack.”

Thursday’s win gives Washington a two-game winning streak as it heads into its showdown with D.H. Conley.

“It’s a huge game for us,” Kozuch said. “Fourth place is a big deal for us, we haven’t finished higher than fourth place in the conference in a while. It’s a cross town rivalry, it’s an important game. We haven’t beaten them since I have been here. A win would be huge for our confidence going into the second half of the season.”
