After squeezing out an extra-inning thriller over White Oak on Tuesday, Washington had no need for a dramatic ending on Thursday as it cruised to a comfortable 10-1 win over Coastal Conference foe West Craven.

Washington excelled in all phases of the game as its batters tallied 10 hits, while the defense played sharp for most of the game.

The Pam Pack trailed 1-0 after the top of the first but tallied three runs in the bottom of the first inning, four in the fourth and three in the sixth to dispose of the Eagles.

Washington (7-7, 6-2) got tremendous production from the heart of its order as its Nos. 3, 4 and 5 hitters combined to drive in six runs off of Eagles (3-12, 1-8) pitcher Megan Heath.

Justyce McKissick, who bats third, went 1-3 with a double and two RBIs, cleanup hitter Morgan Bryant went 2-4 with two RBIs and Sydney Gurkin finished the game with one hit and drove in two runs.

“Coming off our exciting Tuesday night come-from-behind win, this one was nice,” Washington coach Doug Whitehead said. “I’m thrilled to death. We hit the ball well and we ran the bases extremely well tonight. The girls went out there doing what they are supposed to be doing.”

Washington was aggressive on the base paths early as it stole five bases in the first inning alone and finished with eight swiped bags.

“Our batters have been protecting our runners in the box,” Whitehead said. “We are just trying to take advantage and run as much as we can.”

The Eagles made four errors on Thursday and the Pack seemingly made them pay for each. Washington took a quick 2-1 lead when Bryant hit an RBI single that allowed Kristi Wood to score. Shakeria Lomax would score on the same play thanks to an Eagles’ error. Bryant would also score on an error later that inning.

In the fourth, a Lomax RBI single allowed Katelyn Singleton to reach home plate to take a 4-1 lead. Washington would tack on two more runs when McKissick smashed a two-run double. McKissick later scored from third on a West Craven error.

Washington would pad its lead in the sixth when Bryant delivered a run-scoring single that was followed up by a Gurkin two-run base hit to put the Pack up 10-1.

With a lead in hand, Washington pitcher Brandi Hardison zipped through the Eagles lineup as she held them to four hits, three of which were off the bat of leadoff hitter Mariah Harris.

“Brandi is very consistent,” Whitehead said. “She moves the ball around and up and down and keeps batters off stride … I couldn’t ask for anymore out of her.”

Hardison struck out three and walked only one batter as the Pam Pack defense made plays behind her.

“When we play good defense we are a good softball team,” Whitehead said.

Staring for the Pack in the field was Lomax, the catcher, and McKissick, the first baseman. Lomax made a nice catch on a foul ball behind the plate midway through the game, while McKissick made a handful of big plays throughout the contest.

“She has been great,” Whitehead said of McKissick. “She has a good tall body, and she has good range and scooping ability.”

Washington, who sits in third place in the Coastal Conference, will be back in action on Tuesday when it plays at Jacksonville.
