Cosmetology students at Beaufort County Community College will display their skills at the Turnage Theater in downtown Washington at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The event, Waves – the Hair Show – is Club Waves, BCCC’s cosmetology club, first hair-and-fashion show.

“We really want to show the community who we are and what we can do,” said Beth Williams, Club Waves president and a cosmetology student.

Nine club members will display their work.

“We’re not going to be cutting hair at the Turnage,” Williams said. “The cutting and styling will be done prior to the show, but there will be some transitioning from the models as they do different styles.”

Williams said the event also serves as a fundraiser for Club Waves. A portion of the money raised will be donated to a family through the Beaufort County Department of Social Services.

“We’re trying create a win-win event, featuring six distinct segments of hair styles and fashions,” she said. “They’ll be all kinds, from professional, casual, children, prom, bridal, nightlife and avant-garde.”

The event allows local merchants to show off their merchandise on live models, she said.

“We’ve been working really hard to put this together, and it is something all of us are proud of,” Williams said. “We went to so many salons and talked with the owners to see if they would be sponsors and come out to the show.”

“Local hair salons and barbershops will have booths set up in the front lobby area of the Turnage an hour prior to the show,” she said.

Door prizes and raffle prizes will be distributed during the show. Raffle tickets may be purchased for $2 each.

Tickets for the event are $5 each in advance or $7 at the door, and children age 5 or under are admitted free. Tickets are available at the BCCC cosmetology department in Building 11 on the BCCC campus, at La Chic Boutique in Bethel, Just My Cut Salon in Washington and Capelli Salon in Washington.
