Robin Hood in reverse?

To the Editor:

Does America play Robin Hood in reverse? Is our government stealing from the poor to give to the rich?

America is supposed to be a Christian nation. As Christians, we are supposed to practice being our “brother’s keeper” and look out for one another. Instead, our government is trying to steal from its poorest citizens (our pitiful Social Security checks) that we have struggled to pay in order to have some income in our old age, no matter how small.

According to all reports, the government is trying to cut our Medicare and Medicaid. I have a better suggestion. Why not encourage the wealthiest people, the ones who have more money than they can possibly use in a lifetime, to donate some of it to these services?

The Forbes 400, from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, lists the 400 richest Americans ranked by net worth. Microsoft chairman Bill Gates is the richest man in America. The oldest member is David Rockefeller. The youngest is Dustin Moskovitz, age 26.

There are 42 women on the list, with a combined net worth of $154 billion. California has the most 400 members with 83, New York has 64, Texas has 45 and Florida has 26. Then there are six members of the Wal-Mart fortune who could help tremendously. Also, there is Oprah Winfrey, Donald Trump and many more. Donald Trump seems to be thinking about running for president in the next term. He also insinuated that he is a Christian. Maybe, if he were elected, he would donate some of his wealth to bail out America!

Another thought: Some of our high-ranking, government officials could agree to take pay cuts. They would still have enough to live far above our senior citizens, with plenty left over.

Greed is the reason for our financial situation in America today. This needs to be addressed, and it needs to start at the top where the problem originated.
