Celebrating Culture

Craftswoman Huetta Pierce of Greenville shows off some of her art Saturday at the first-ever African-American Culture Festival off Griffins Beach Road east of Washington. Also on hand were people selling refreshments, including fried fish and soft drinks. Sponsored by the Beaufort County branch of the NAACP, the festival was intended to educate the community, especially young people, about black culture and history and the sacrifices made by generations of black men and women, said Bill Booth, local NAACP president. The event will be held again next year, Booth said. (WDN Photo/Jonathan Clayborne)
