Pirates sting Hornets

East Carolina cruised past Delaware State 7-1 on Saturday to win its third straight game and improve its record to 33-17.
Before the game, the Pirates held a Senior Day ceremony where they honored Trent Whitehead, Seth Maness, Seth Simmons, Brad Mincey, Zach Woods, Austin Homan and Mike Anderson.
Maness (7-3), the reigning Conference USA Pitcher of the Year, picked up the win for ECU as he allowed one run and five hits while striking out three batters.
Elliot Gardner was tagged with the loss for the Hornets as he gave up two runs in three innings.
East Carolina scored two runs in the second, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the eighth, while Delaware State scored its lone run in the first inning.
Whitehead, a Washington native, went 2-for-5 for the Pirates and recorded a stolen base.
Philip Clark led the ECU offense as he went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, while Zach Wright was 2-for-4 and Mike Ussery went 2-for-4 with an RBI.= Overall, the Pirates tallied 13 hits.
ECU will look to complete the sweep of the Hornets today when they square off at 1 p.m.
