Miriam Newby Ware, 83, passed away peacefully, Monday, May 9, 2011.
A private family burial at Yeatesville Cemetery, N.C., will be held at a later date.
Ms. Ware was born June 1, 1927, in Beaufort County, N.C. She was the daughter of the late Guy A. Newby and Rosa B. Edwards. After more than 60 years of living in Norfolk, Va., Ms. Ware was a “Carolina Girl” at heart. Raised in Bath, N.C., she was a graduate of Pantego High School and worked at the Roses Five-n-Dime in downtown Belhaven. She was a dedicated daughter to her “Momma”, whom she loved dearly, and cherished the farm where she grew up. After moving to Norfolk, she was employed by the Algonquin House and later, DePaul and Chesapeake General Hospitals, where she worked many years before her retirement.
She is survived by her daughters, Evelyn Schmitz of Virginia Beach, Myra Ware of Virginia Beach, Gail Phipps and her husband John Phipps, Jr. of Norfolk; six grandchildren, Todd Anderson, Kristina White, Ian Phipps, Mallory Phipps, Morgan Phipps, Madison Phipps; two great grandchildren and her beloved cats, Sterling and Bob. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her brother, Archie M. Newby.
Memorials may be made in memory of Miriam Ware to the Lydia Roper Home, 127 East 40th Street, Norfolk, VA 23504.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents of the Lydia Roper Home for their warm and compassionate, companionship and care of Ms. Ware, providing a safe and loving home during the finale of her life.
