Six-show series coming this summer

At the Turnage Theater, we believe that summer is the perfect time to showcase the incredible talents found right here in North Carolina. With that in mind, the Turnage has teamed up with the Beaufort County Traditional Music Association and the Beaufort County Arts Council to bring you a six-show summer music series, which pulls from across the genres and the state to fill your Saturday nights with great music.

We kick off the BoCo Summer Music Series on May 28 with Onward, Soldiers at 8 p.m. The members of this Wilmington-based band range in age from 25 to 45 and bring a wide variety of experiences and influences to the table. Each show is a melding of bluegrass, country and rock ’n’ roll performed artlessly by four talented musicians. Add to this a flawless singer-songwriter, and you have a combination that promises to please audiences of all ages.

The second show on June 4, also at 8 p.m., features The Charming Youngsters, a jangle-pop band out of Greenville. This youthful explosion of talent will hook you in with its quirky lyrics and frenetic energy. It’s certainly a show to see if you are young or young at heart.

On June 25, we bring you the string-heavy sounds of Chapel Hill-based band, Sinful Savage Tigers; on July 9, it’s the folk/bluegrass styling of the Granville County-based band The Barefoot Movement; July 23 sees the bluesy vocals of Ocracoke’s The Katy Mitchell Band; and the series closes Aug. 6 with the eclectic sounds of Uncle Mountain, a group of musicians from Asheville whose love of upbeat music and a good time is impossible to resist.

Any ticket to any show in the series is just $12, though seating is reserved, so order early to get the best available seats. Or you can buy tickets to the entire series and pay just $10 for each show. All you have to do is go online at turnagetheater.com and click on “live events.” You can come by the box office from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; or you can call 252-975-1191 to reserve your seats for any or all of these great shows.

Speaking of great events, I have a few others that need mentioning while I am writing. If you haven’t gotten tickets for the Tar River Swing Band’s “Let Freedom Swing” show tonight at 7:30, it’s not too late to get good seats either downstairs or up in the mezzanine.

On June 5, that’s a Sunday at 4 p.m., we’ve got pianist Heidi Souza giving a donation-only concert for everyone who loves the emotionally charged music of Beethoven, Chopin and more. There are no advanced tickets for this event; just show up between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to take your seat, and remember: donations are appreciated.

And finally, a show that’s not for everyone, but certain to please some: comedian Carla Collins brings you “Venus Envy.” Collins is hailed as Canada’s answer to Tina Fey. She’s rowdy, raucous and hilarious without pulling a single punch. She brings her comedy to benefit the Turnage for two nights, June 10-11, along with special guest, Washington native Rush Derr, who is sure to wow audiences. Once again, it’s not a show for everyone, so don’t buy a ticket if you are offended by curses, comics or cross-dressing.

As always, we are working hard at the Turnage Theater to bring something for every taste. We hope you’ll join us for the shows you will enjoy, and we look forward to seeing you here this summer.
