Violet P. Sheppard

Mrs. Violet Phelps Sheppard, 63, a resident of 301 Oak Drive, Washington, died Saturday, June 4, 2011, at her home.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2011, from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington conducted by pastor George Daniels. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
Mrs. Sheppard was born in Bertie County, North Carolina, on July 10, 1947, daughter of the late Jesse Phelps and Ruth Perry Phelps. She was a 1966 graduate of Bertie Senior High School and continued her education at Harrell’s Beauty Academy of Washington, N.C. Mrs. Sheppard was a retired cosmetology instructor at Martin Community College with over 20 years of service. She also worked as co-manager of Cinderella’s Beauty Salon working with the late Maggie Buck for 20 years. Mrs. Sheppard was a certified cosmetology instructor who had served as past president of the Affiliate 1 of the North Carolina Hairdresser’s Association. On Aug. 16, 1981, she married Lyman Sheppard, Jr., who survives. Mrs. Sheppard was a member of West End Baptist Church where she served as choir director and taught Sunday School.
In addition to her husband of the home, Mrs. Sheppard is survived by her children: Ronald Barringer and wife Michelle of Wilson, N.C., Thomas Sheppard of Waynesville, N.C., Richard Sheppard and Lynn Sheppard both of Tampa, Fla., and one granddaughter: Aurora Michelle Barringer of Wilson, N.C.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sheppard is preceded in death by two brothers: Jesse Phelps and Kenneth Phelps.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and other times at the home located at 301 Oak Drive, Washington, N.C.
