On July 14, Beaufort County Sheriff Deputy Sean Williams was transporting inmate Demerick Brinkley, 23, of 66 Flanders Filters Road in Washington, to the Beaufort County Courthouse for a pending case. Brinkley was able to free his hands from the handcuffs and roll down the rear passenger window and open the car door. Brinkley fled on foot approximately a block before he was apprehended by Williams.

Williams’ windows were not locked on his patrol vehicle. The sheriff’s office has taken appropriate actions to prevent this from happening again. Brinkley’s wrist sustained minor bruises from where Brinkley forced the handcuffs from around his wrist.

Brinkley was charged with resist, delay and obstruct. Brinkley was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $5,000 secure bond.
