The Washington City Council on Monday added its voice to the growing chorus of local and state officials opposed to a plan that would merge Beaufort County Community College with another community college.

The council voted unanimously to approve a resolution opposing the merger plan.

The resolution, in part, reads as follows: “(M)erging Beaufort County Community College with another community college would diminish the local support of and loyalty to the College and its Foundation; and … merging Beaufort County Community College with another community could … decimate the ability of the citizens of Beaufort County to operate the College in a way that meets the needs of the community.”

Mayor Archie Jennings presented it to the council.

BCCC leaders also plan to ask the Beaufort County Board of Commissioners to support the same resolution.

The Beaufort County Board of Education, which appoints a member of BCCC’s governing Board of Trustees, was expected Tuesday to join the fight opposing the merger plans.

The Washington County Board of Commissioners has been asked to consider similar resolutions.
