On July 10 at approximately 3 p.m., the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report indicating a vehicle had been taken from a residence on Shad Bend Drive, Washington, without the owner’s permission.
A deputy responded to the residence and spoke to the reporting party, who provided a possible suspect’s name and a description of the vehicle. During the follow-up investigation, deputies learned the suspect was wanted on two counts of failure to appear in court.
Sgt. Jeremy Landeck later located the vehicle on U.S. Highway 264 near the Rosedale community. Landeck performed a traffic stop on the vehicle and identified the driver as Richard S. Makowski, 44, of Shad Bend Drive, Washington.
Makowski was arrested on the two outstanding orders for arrests. He also was charged with having no driver’s license.
During a search of the vehicle, Landeck located a powdery substance (consistent with cocaine) in a cup. A field-test kit was used to confirm the presence of cocaine. Makowski was subsequently charged with possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $9,000 secured bond. The vehicle was returned to its owner.
