Gene A. Woolard

Mr. Gene Autry Woolard, age 68, a resident of 649 Lizzard Slip Road, Washington, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at his home.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at the chapel of Paul Funeral Home of Washington officiated by Mike Caton. Frank Godley, Steven Woolard, Lonnie Woolard Jr., Vernon Silverthorne, Phil Garris and Richard Gerard Jr. will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow at the Roy Woolard family cemetery.
Mr. Woolard was born in Beaufort County on April 7, 1943, to the late Roy Winfield Woolard and Edna Louis Woolard. He was a graduate of Bath High School. Mr. Woolard was a retired maintenance supervisor with the Mid-East Regional Housing Authority. On June 4, 1965, Mr. Woolard married the former Sue Woolard, who survives. Mr. Woolard enjoyed hunting with his children and grandchildren and was an avid grower of sweet potatoes. He was a member of Rosemary Church of Christ.
In addition to his wife Sue, of the home, Mr. Woolard is survived by his children: Neal McCray Woolard and wife Stephanie and Susan Woolard Cox and husband Robert, all of Washington; a brother, Lonnie I. Woolard of Washington; two sisters, Mary Godley and Wilma Tingen, both of Washington; grandchildren, Heather Dawn DeJong, Daniel Gene Woolard, Clarence Neal Woolard, Hagen Tyler Morris, Austin Lee Cox, Dawson McCray Woolard and Jacob Autry Cox, all of Washington; a great-grandson, Jaxson McCray DeJong of Washington and was expecting the birth of a great-granddaughter in October.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Woolard was preceded in death by a son, Clarence Gene Woolard, and three brothers, Leroy Woolard, Ronald Bruce Woolard and Harley Cosker Woolard.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rosemary Church of Christ Building Fund, 5226 Slatestone Road, Washington NC 27889.
