Commission should enforce “freeboard”

To the Editor:

Flood insurance policyholders of Beaufort County, please encourage the county commissioners to enforce the “freeboard” requirement so that flood victims can qualify for ICC (Increased Cost Compliance) which is a part of most standard flood policies.

Because Beaufort County uses the 1929 BFE Base Flood Elevation, most homes cannot qualify, but if our commissioners enforce this freeboard requirement which mandates that houses be raised above BFE to meet flood protection then citizens would receive as much as $30,000 to help elevate their homes and free themselves of extra expenses and worry from future floods.

This act requires no money from the county and gives our citizens monies that they are entitled to. I encourage all citizens to contact your commissioners to enact this policy.
