Samuel G. “Sammy” Broadway Jan. 6, 1937 – Jan. 16, 2012

Mr. Samuel Gilliam “Sammy” Broadway of 2731 Chandler Road, Vanceboro, went to be with his Lord on Jan. 16, 2012, at University Health Systems Inpatient Hospice in Greenville, following several years of declining health.

Mr. Broadway was born in Vanceboro on Jan. 6, 1937, to Samuel Gilliam and Mary Elizabeth Chandler Broadway. He attended school in Vanceboro and served his country for several years in the North Carolina National Guard. He was a member of Haw Branch Church of Christ in Chocowinity. Mr. Broadway was a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local # 495. He has worked from New York to Florida throughout his 50-plus year career as a journeyman Electrician, residing in Indiana, Pa., for several years in the 1960s and 1970s. Through his influence, all of his brothers became electricians in that organization as well. On Nov. 1, 1958, he married the former Lillie Marie “Tootsie” Moore.

Survivors include his wife, “Tootsie” of the home; his four children: Jeffrey Gilliam Broadway and wife Karen (McAden), Tina Marie Broadway, Lisa Broadway Knox and Steven Brent Broadway and wife Stacey (Wall); grandchildren: Jeffrey Gilliam Jr., and John McAden Broadway; William Thaddeous Cox Jr., Hannah Leah, Benjamin Ryan and Gilliam Jordan Knox. Also surviving are brothers and sister: Robert Earl and wife Connie (Waters) Broadway of Vanceboro, Curtis Lee and wife Thalia (Carawon) Broadway of Vanceboro, Mary Louise (Broadway) Anderson and husband Larry of Washington, and Linwood Oscar and wife Josephine (O’Neal) Broadway of Blount’s Creek; several nephews, nieces and great-nephews and -nieces and his devoted companion Chocolate.

The family will receive friends 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. tonight at Paul Funeral Home in Washington and other times at the home. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Haw Branch Church of Christ Cemetery with Jason Kirkman officiating. Frankie Purser, David Woolard, Jimmy Stokes, Don Hill, Larry Anderson, James Broadway will serve as pallbearers.
