William “Bill” A. Kendall

Mr. William “Bill” A. Kendall, age 89, a resident of 17 Braddy Road, N.C. Highway 32, Washington, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, at River Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Washington.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rosemary Church of Christ with Mike Caton and Ward Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Kendall was born on Dec. 12, 1922, in Lansdowne, Md., the son of the late Fredric Kendall and Ida Roberta Naeser Kendall. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland in 1970. Bill served his country for 25 years until his retirement from the United States Army in which he served in the 11th Airborne and 4th Ranger Battalion during WWII. He participated in the European Theater, Korea and later in Vietnam. Mr. Kendall worked with the North Carolina Department of Transportation Ferry Division where he worked at The Bayview terminal for 14 years.

He is survived by his wife, Grace Sullivan Kendall of the home; two daughters, Margaret Ann Kendall Phelps and husband Carl of Germantown, Ohio, Joan Elizabeth Kendall Ward and husband Roger of Stewartstown, Pa.; one sister, Margaret Kendall Gries of Colorado; and his grandsons, Andrew Phelps of Shrewsbury, Pa., and Matthew Ward of Stewartstown, Pa. Mr. Kendall was preceded in death by two sons, William Kendall Jr. and John Stephen Kendall; two brothers, Richard Kendall and Fred Kendall; and a sister Nancy Kendall Richey.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. tonight at Rosemary Church of Christ and other times at the home of Travis and Dottie Sullivan located at 8512 N.C. Highway 32 North, Washington.
