Mrs. Opal Whichard Cherry, Sept. 7, 1933 – Feb. 18, 2012

Mrs. Opal June Whichard Cherry, age 78, a resident of 3523 Horse Pen Swamp Road, Washington, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington conducted by Arthur “Bud” Ball. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
The following will serve as pallbearers: Bryan Cherry, Travis Cherry, Mike Rogers, Bobby Fulford Jr., Donnie Woolard and Jeff Carrow. Clint Asby will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
Mrs. Cherry was born in Beaufort County on Sept. 7, 1933. She was the daughter of the late John Benjamin Whichard and Cassie Leggette Whichard. Mrs. Cherry was a homemaker. She was a member of the Tranters Creek Church of Christ and the Woodmen of the World.
Mrs. Cherry was married to Floyd Reid Cherry, who preceded her in death March 22, 1998.
Mrs. Cherry is survived by a son, Stanley Gates Cherry of Washington; a daughter, Beverly F. Nowarah of Plymouth; two sisters, Audrey Woolard and Judy W. Fulford, both of Washington; two brothers, Jimmy Whichard of Hunters Bridge, Mitchell “Mickey” Whichard of Vanceboro; four grandchildren, Travis Cherry, Valerie Cherry, Shea Carrow, Bryan Cherry; and three great-grandchildren, Ryleigh Carrow, Daisy Cherry, Tyler Asby.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Cherry was preceded in death by a son, Floyd Shelton Cherry; two daughters, Gloria Reid Cherry and Linda Faye Cherry; and two sisters, Clara W. Williams and Joann W. Gray.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. tonight at Paul Funeral Home in Washington and other times at the home.
