Matthew Howard “Matt” Miller

Matt was born July 2, 1981, in South Hampton, Long Island, N.Y., son of Kenneth Everett and Ruth Ann Brown Miller. He worked with NCDOT as an Able Bodied Seaman on the Governor Russell. When not on the Pamlico River, he worked at Georgie’s Oyster Bar in Belhaven and also worked as a commercial fisherman. Matt was an avid golfer and outdoorsman who loved the water and fishing and playing softball. The family encourages people to “go fishing in his honor.” An artificial reef is being constructed in Matt’s memory, where his cremated remains will be interred, organized by his close friends, Garrett Slade, Davis Butler, David Modlin and Dustin Pinkham and supporting friends.

In addition to his parents, Matt is survived by his brother Kenneth Everett “Ken” Miller Jr. of Houston, Texas, his sister Meredith Rosalind Miller Newell and husband Nicolas Alexander Newell of East Flat Rock, N.C., his grandparents Howard and Virginia Brown of East Hampton, N.Y. and North Carolina, and Arlene Loper of Washington, special nephews Darren Alexander Newell and Kenneth William Miller and many special aunts and uncles.
