Sidney Johnston “Sid” Hassell Sr., 88, a resident of Roper died Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at Vidant Inpatient Hospice in Greenville.
Born Feb. 11, 1924, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Louis Edward Hassell Sr. and Myrtle Johnston Hassell and was preceded in death by his brother, Louis Edward Hassell Jr. Sid was a retired dairy farmer, a U.S. Army Glider Corps veteran of World War II and member of Hebron United Methodist Church. He was past chairman of the Washington County Board of Education, member of Roper Ruritan Club, Sunday school superintendent of Hebron United Methodist Church and a graduate of North Carolina State University.
His family includes his wife, Mary Frances “Frankie” Davis Hassell of Roper; daughters, Florence H. Rabon and husband Randy of Raleigh, and Mary Nell H. Klein and husband Bob of Columbia, PA; son, Sidney J. Hassell Jr. and wife Cheryl of Bath; grandchildren, Joshua Allen Hassell, Louis Edward Hassell, Jeffrey Ward Rabon, Sarah Frances Rabon, Johannah Rebekah Klein, Mikayla Grace Klein and Avery Jonathan Klein.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hebron United Methodist Church, Roper with the Rev. Frank Alexander and Gene Waters officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday at the church following the service.
