Bertha Mae Jones

Mrs. Bertha Mae Godley Jones, age 97, a resident of 408 N.C. Highway 33 East, Chocowinity, died Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at her home.
A funeral service will held at 2 p.m. Friday at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington officiated by Dr. Richard Sheriff. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Charles Rose, Henry Briley, Wayne Flint, Ben Dieter, John Cox and Phil Smith will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Motteler, Ed Youmans and Van Dixon.
Mrs. Jones was born in Beaufort County on Nov. 4, 1914, daughter of the late William Marshall Godley Sr. and the late Martha Jane Barrington Godley. She was a 1934 graduate of Washington High School and married John Richard Jones on Dec. 24, 1938, who preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 1953. Mrs. Jones was a homemaker who helped on the family farm. She also worked at Singer Furniture Co. of Chocowinity and Hamilton Beach.  Mrs. Jones was a member of First Baptist Church of Chocowinity.
Survivors include two daughters: Carol Elks of Greenville and Vivian Briley and her husband Henry of Greenville; four grandchildren: Susan E. Cox and her husband John, Carol Lynn E. Rose and her husband Charles, Paige Stanley and Wayne Flint, and Sara Dieter and her husband Ben; three great-grandchildren: Emily Cox, Grace Rose, William Rose; nieces and nephews: Elizabeth Motteler and her husband Larry, Sylvia Youmans and her husband Ed, Phil Smith, Linda D. Lewis, Mary Jo Guthrie Latham and her husband Marvin, Patricia Toler, Kenneth Winfield, John W. Jones, Martha G. Malone and her husband Les, Chris Motteler and wife Missy and daughter Emma; a number of other family members, and caregivers Bessie Carawan and Joyce Moret. Mrs. Jones was predeceased by four brothers: William Marshall Godley Jr., Rodney Godley, Burley Godley, Floyd Godley and two sisters: Doris G. Lewis and Sallie G. Smith.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. Friday at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and at other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for memorial contributions to be made to First Baptist Church, 230 N.C. Highway 33 West, Chocowinity, NC 27817.
