Beaufort County’s 300th Anniversary Celebration symphony performance won’t end when the last violin is packed up Saturday night. One local church extended an invitation to “Symphony Winds,” North Carolina Symphony’s woodwind quintet.
Symphony Winds members Mary E. Boone, flute; Victor Benedict, bassoon; Michael E. Cyzewski, clarinet; Rachel Niketopoulos, French horn; and Sandra Posch, oboe, will have a free concert at First Christian Church of Washington Sunday, Sept. 23, at 2:30 p.m.
“Our pastor at First Christian thought it would be nice to have a few members of the symphony perform,” said Dr. Beth Clark, the church’s music director.
Clark has not received the symphony’s program yet, but said “Peter and the Wolf” will be on it. Regardless of the selections, Clark said the show would be educational and entertaining. The performance will include individual demonstrations of instruments and an introduction to listening skills.
“It’s always wonderful to hear really skilled musicians play,” Clark said.
The concert was made possible by the church’s Roberson-Bagwell Endowment Fund, a fund set up by Hannah Bagwell. She was the church’s choir director for 40 years.
Clark said the fund is divided into three parts. The fund covers the church’s community festival, its Bill Bagwell Bell Choir and an annual choir retreat. Anything left over is used for events like Sunday’s.
“This year, we’ve got about three others planned,” Clark said.
The next music event will be in October.
