Charles August Kuehn

Charles August Kuehn, son of the late August and Emma (Hein) Kuehn, was born on April 7, 1921 in Hartford, Connecticut and departed this life to be with his heavenly Father on Saturday, October 27, 2012 in Tarboro, North Carolina. Through baptism at Christ Lutheran Church, he was recognized as a member of God’s family.
Charles earned a B.S. degree in 1942 from Trinity College in Hartford. In that same year, he entered the U.S. Army. Assigned to the Army Air Corps, he served in the Pacific area receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He earned an M.B.A. degree from the University of Michigan in 1948. On May 16, 1953, he married Martha Freitag. In 1957, after nine years as a builder of homes in the greater Hartford area, he joined a public accounting firm, receiving his C.P.A. certificate in 1960, the year in which his firm merged with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell Co. He joined the audit department of Scovill Mfg. Co. in 1966 and was transferred, in 1968, to their Hamilton Beach Division in Washington, North Carolina, retiring from there in 1986 as Ass’t. Controller.
For most of his life Charles was very active, first in the Lutheran Church and later in the Presbyterian Church. He taught Sunday school and adult bible classes for more than forty years, sang in choirs, served on numerous church committees and served as president, treasurer, and elder of churches in which he was a member. After retirement, he served the local chapter of the American Red Cross as director and treasurer, the Community Concert Series as president and director, Friends of Brown Library as director, and as a member of the local Salvation Army Advisory Board. He was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and the Meals-On-Wheels program. For the past several years, he was also a member of Down East Seniors. Although he excelled at neither, he enjoyed playing bridge and golfing at the Washington Yacht and Country Club.
He leaves a son and daughter-in law, Charles Jr. and Cynthia Kuehn of Wixom, Michigan; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Thomas Swanner Jr. of Washington, NC; four grandsons, Charles Kuehn, III of Sydney, Australia, Paul Kuehn of Gaffney, SC, and Zachary and Jeffrey Swanner of Washington, NC; and a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Wes Tervo of Farmington, CT. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Freitag Kuehn; two sisters, Eleanor Dorau and Louise Kuehn; and an infant brother, Walter Kuehn.
A funeral  service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Washington, NC on Sunday, October 28th at 2:00 PM., conducted by Pastor Lee Kinney.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Washington, NC or Bethany Lutheran Church, West Hartford, CT.
