Once again the Washington 12U All-Stars kicked off the game with a high-powered assault and once again the All-Stars would walk away victorious as they downed the East Beaufort All-Stars 11-1 on Wednesday to pick up a pool play victory in the ENC Babe Ruth state tournament at the Susiegray McConnell Complex.
The Washington All-Stars pounced for six runs in the first inning and then another three runs in the second to bank a 9-0 lead that would pave the way to victory.
“It seems like our girls were able to center the ball and we seem to be hitting the ball well at the start,” Washington coach Dallis Tucker said. “But, it seems like the latter innings we slowed down and got a little lethargic, which drives me crazy.”
After falling behind 9-0, the East Beaufort All-Stars regained their footing as they scored a run in the third when Savannah Slade’s RBI single scored Alexis Carawan and held Washington scoreless until the sixth inning and final inning.
“I thought Washington came out and hit the ball pretty good and we made a few errors that put us down in a hole,” East Beaufort coach Eric Slade said. “But then we settled in and both teams pitched good against one another and it was a good battle.”
Washington’s Abbigail Tucker threw three innings to get the win, while Summer Campbell threw two scoreless innings in relief and Rebekah Williams threw a scoreless sixth to seal the deal.
Williams also added an RBI triple and stole home, while Desiree Maurizzio, Blake Swanner, Maggie Craig, Devin Bunch and Tucker had two hits each.
Pitcher Mackenzie Seiler got the start for East Beaufort and Logan Jefferson came out of the bullpen in the third to pitch the remainder of the game.
