Rush U. Derr III

Mr. Rush Underwood Derr, III, age 76, a resident of 146 VOA Road, Washington, NC died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington, NC.

Private funeral services will be held in Virginia Beach, VA.

Mr. Derr was born in Roanoke, Virginia son of the late Oscar D. Derr, III and Mary Smithers Derr. Mr. Derr married the former Wilma Melton, who preceded him in death on October 9, 2005. Upon graduating high school, Mr. Derr attended The College of William and Mary and later graduated from the Medical College of Virginia. Mr. Derr was a registered pharmacist with over fifty years of service. During portions of these fifty years, he, along with his wife, owned and operated a pharmacy. Although he had a very active professional life, Mr. Derr was involved in his local church, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry for a number of years. Most recently, he was involved in Galilee Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Mr. Derr was also a past member of the Washington Moose Lodge.

Mr. Derr is survived by his children: Darlene Derr Goehring and her husband Keith of Washington, NC and Rush Derr, IV and his spouse Alan Knappett of Toronto, Canada, grandchildren: Anna W. Foster, Sarah W. Waller, Brandy W. Nobles, S. Justin Foster, Jason U. Foster, Megan Davis, Christopher Keller and Vayden Woods and eight great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Derr is preceded in death by a son: Marshall D. Derr and two daughters: Mary Katherine Derr and Teresea Derr Foster, a brother: Oscar D. Derr and two sisters: Betsy Allen Urquhart and Mary Wootsie Aitkins.

The family will receive friends on Friday, July 19, 2013 from 7:00 p.m.-9:00p.m. at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and other times at the home located at 146 VOA Road, Washington, NC 27889.
