Pocahontas L. Rutledge

July 11, 1929 – July 31, 2013

Mrs. Pocahontas Lanier Rutledge, 84, a resident of Washington, died Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at Vidant Medical Center of Greenville.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at the Lanier family cemetery of Washington.

Mrs. Rutledge was born in Beaufort County on July 11, 1929, daughter of the late Leonard Brunson Lanier and the late Julia Frankie Williams Lanier. She was a 1947 graduate of Washington High School. On Nov. 21, 1956, she married Harold Wilburn Rutledge who survives. Mrs. Rutledge dedicated her life to being a homemaker for her family and was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses of Washington.

Surviving along with Mrs. Rutledge’s husband Harold of the home is a daughter: Janis R. Trimm and a son: Dale Wilburn Rutledge, both of Washington, and two sisters: Sarah L. Phillips of Nashville, NC, and Julia L. Leggett of Washington. Mrs. Rutledge was predeceased by two brothers: John Calvin Lanier and Brunson Williams Lanier and four sisters: Mabel L. Everett, Alva Wilson Lanier, Mary L. Steele and Ethel Hodges.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and other times at the home.
