Gladys “Ruth” Sawyer Hopkins, age 89, of Willows Court, Washington, died Monday, August 12, 2013 at River Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Washington.
Mrs. Hopkins was born November 30, 1923, in the Montgomery Community of Hyde County. She was the daughter of the late Reuben Edward Sawyer and the late Gladys Carmen Richards Sawyer. On January 20, 1950, in Burlington NC, she married Robert Speight Hopkins, who preceded her in death in 1988.
Survivors are four sisters: Gloria S. Fotusky of Virginia Beach, VA, Zella S. Stassfort of Loganville, GA; Mary Lou Pedley of Washington, NC and Rachel S. Lonberger of Panama City Beach, FL and two brothers Reuben E. Sawyer, Jr. of Washington, NC and William D. Sawyer of Belhaven, NC. Additional survivors include two step-brothers: James Madison Raburn of St. George, UT and Joseph W. “J.W.” Raburn of Greenville, NC and four step-sisters: Harriet R. Pendleton of St. George, UT; Lenora R. Bright and Doris R. Cahoon, both of Swan Quarter, NC; and Josephine R. Haywood of Portsmouth, VA; and one step-son Jackie Hopkins of Long Island, NY.
She was preceded in death by two brothers: Ormand Dempsey Sawyer in 1963, and Floyd Wilson Sawyer in 2013; a stepsister Mary Lou R. Clausing in 1992; a stepbrother John P. “Jackie” Raburn in 1999; and a stepdaughter Katherine Hopkins.
Graveside services will 10:00 AM Thursday, August 15, 2013 at Pamlico Memorial Gardens on U.S. Hwy. 264 East, Washington, conducted by Rev. W. Lee Kinney of the First Presbyterian Church.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington.
