This continues a series of stories begun in 2012 on businesses in the Tyrrell County Chamber of Commerce.
Buying a home is an import milestone in one’s life.

Buying a home that is safe to live in is also important.

The Tyrrell County community has services available for those looking to balance the needs of comfort and safety.

At Armstrong’s Refrigeration, Heating and Air there stands a group of people ready to meet the needs of the community.

David Armstrong Jr. owner, discussed details of his business in a recent interview.
“Our company provides HVAC sales, service, and installation. My father began this business in 1974. I currently have 15 employees consisting of service technicians and installers and office staff,” he said.

Armstrong said that a major change for his business is due to technology and the Internet which enables the business to grow throughout eastern NC-in addition- the business has a larger employee base which enables the company to turn over a greater amount of work.

David Armstrong Sr. started the business with one truck and no employees.
“I do hope I have made him proud, by following in his footsteps,” said David Jr.

There are many variables to consider when installing HVAC systems.

The client needs to consider not oversizing or undersizing the system. Humidity and moisture should also be considered.

A lot has changed in the last ten years in reference to controlling humidity in crawl spaces especially in Eastern North Carolina where elevation tends to be low.

Fifteen years ago, HVAC advised the consumer to open vents under crawl spaces to control moisture.

“Now we have since learned that we should not bring warm moist air from the outdoors. There should a vapor barrier rolled out in crawl spaces. All vents should also cut off to keep warm moisture out,” said Armstrong. In some cases a dehumidifier may need to be installed.

Some safety standards need to be followed.
“The most important is to have an outdoor disconnect in proper working order for safe HVAC service. When units are elevated, it is important that unit access is safe for all technicians. Filters are also need to be changed monthly,” said Armstrong.

The main difference in heating systems in buildings versus a home is that a building typically has a commercial system. The construction is not usually as tight as a residence.

As a rule of thumb, you will have more air in a building versus a private home simply due to size and occupants.

“There is one ton of air for every twenty people for body heat alone,” said Armstrong.
