Washington County Vice Chair Tracey Johnson and Commissioner D. Cole Phelps will serve on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) for 2013-14

Washington County Vice Chair Tracey Johnson and Commissioner D. Cole Phelps will serve on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) for 2013-14.

Phelps, the youngest Commissioner in the state, was appointed to a one-year term on the board as an at-large member by NCACC President Ray Jeffers of Person County. The NCACC president appoints five at-large members to the Board of Directors to serve a one-year term. The at-large members are appointed to ensure balance on the Board of Directors. His term will expire in August 2014.

Phelps is in his first term as a member of the Washington County Board of Commissioners. He also serves on the NCACC’s Health & Human Services and Public Education steering committees.

Phelps said, “I am honored and humbled to serve the people of North Carolina. This is an exciting time for the people of Washington County as Commissioner Johnson and I are the first Commissioner from Washington County to serve on this statewide board. I’ll do my best to ensure that the voices of Eastern North Carolina are represented.”

Johnson was elected to a two-year term as the District 1 director, representing Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hyde, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell and Washington counties. Johnson also serves on the NCACC’s Justice & Public Safety and Public Education steering committees. Her term will expire in August 2015.

Johnson said, “I am humbled to have been elected to represent District 1 on the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners board of directors. Not only will I represent my constituents and all the citizens of Washington County, but also the citizens of the counties in the district. Many of the problems of the counties of the northeast are shared problems.  It will be a pleasure to work alongside Commissioner Phelps and the other board members to ensure that Washington County and the district have a voice and a vision for our future.”

The NCACC Board of Directors makes policy decisions to guide the NCACC and its staff through the year. The board consists of the five officers (Past President, President, President Elect, First Vice President and Second Vice President), 18 district directors, elected members of the National Association of Counties (NACo) Board of Directors, five at-large commissioners, up to five past presidents, and several ex-officio members who chair NCACC committees or hold other appointments from the president.
