Coats for children: Saturday event will clothe families

Iris Spruill is throwing a party Saturday. It’s a fundraiser in Beebe Memorial Park. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. The money is the start of Spruill’s project to give away winter clothing to area children in need.

“We are trying to provide coats, scarves and gloves,” Spruill said.

She is calling her event the Paradise fundraiser after her Washington Square business, Paradise Sounds of Music.

Spruill has lined up live entertainment for the fundraiser. Christian hip-hop artists will perform. There will be a puppet show and a round of musical chairs for the children. Spruill said she has one more act.

“My son, he sings and he’s gonna put up a show,” she said.

Spruill’s son is Pastor Rodney Coles of Greenville’s Churches Outreach Network. His network gave away 17,000 sweet potatoes last March and free turkeys during the holidays.

Spruill started an outreach of her own. She gives away food every Saturday afternoon at Washington Square Mall.

Today’s fundraiser will have a bouncy toy for children and vendors will be selling arts, crafts and other goods.

“One guy wants to set some motorcycles up,” Spruill said.

Spruill has a bucket list, of sorts. Giving away the winter clothing and passing out free food are high on that list.

“I’m always busy and I’m always trying,” she said. “There’re things that I want to do before I leave this earth. Certain things come to me and I don’t question God.”

Free hot dogs will be served from noon to 2 p.m. and the first 25 people in attendance will receive a free gift.
