Mr. Carl Elwood Boyd, age 88, a resident of 1470 Pocosin Road, Pinetown, died Sunday, October 13, 2013 at Ridgewood Manor Nursing Center.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, October 17, 2013 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington, conducted by Tad Tankard and Keith Tankard. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens.
The following will serve as pallbearers: Will Tankard, Zack Tankard, Sam Bateman, Tony Mirabella, Chris Moon and Ed House. Billy Boyd, Doug Boyd, Todd Boyd and Horace Waters will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Boyd was born in Beaufort County on January 3, 1925. He was the son of the late William Zachary Boyd and Geneva Pearl Waters Boyd. Mr. Boyd served in the U.S. Navy during World War II . Mr. Boyd was a retired farmer. He was a newspaper carrier for the Washington Daily News for 20 years, working to age 85. Mr. Boyd carried the newspaper in the Plymouth area. He was a member of the Athens Chapel Church of Christ. Mr. Boyd enjoyed the mountains and the outdoors. In his spare time, he loved to read, build things, garden and ride in the car.
On February 7, 1953, Mr. Boyd married the former Elsie Hunter Bowen, who survives.
Mr. Boyd is survived by his wife, Elsie of the home; three daughters, Carlene Boyd Bateman and husband, Allen of Beaufort County, Yvonne Boyd Tankard and husband, Keith of Bath; Georgia Ann Boyd of Pinetown; one brother, Hugh Norton Boyd of Pinetown; six grandchildren, Will Tankard and wife, Meredith Lockley Tankard of Holly Springs, Zack Tankard and wife, Emily Dunbar Tankard of Washington, Ginger Tankard Mirabella and husband, Tony of Bath, Mary Hunter Bateman Moon and husband, Chris, Sam Bateman and wife, Kelly Metcalfe Bateman, Rachel Bateman House and husband, Ed; 15 great grandchildren and sister in law, Marie Boyd of Pinetown.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Boyd was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Boyd and a brother, Gerald Boyd.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at Paul Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington and other times at the home, 1470 Pocosin Road, Pinetown.
