A man driving erratically on U.S. Highway 264, west of Washington, caught the attention of two Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputies on Nov. 19. The traffic stop would end with an arrest.

According to Maj. Kenneth Watson, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, the driver—Allen Otto Lewis, 70, of Scotts Store Road in Grantsboro—had no license, but what he did have in the care was an assortment of drug paraphernalia including syringes, smoking pipes and plastic baggies.

But what drew deputies to conduct a traffic stop, was how Lewis was driving at 1:30 a.m. on a major highway, Watson said.

“This particular case, the vehicle was being operated at approximately 10 mph on Highway 264. That’s pretty erratic driving—10 mph on a 4-lane highway,” Watson said.

Lewis was charged with possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, no operators license and expired registration and held at the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond.
