“This is awesome. The kids have played well during the season and they really ended strong today,” said Chocowinity coach Carlton Godley. “They came out here today with the goal of winning and they succeeded.”
The Indians, who were also the regular season champions, ended the year with a 9-1 record.
The Giants (7-3) battled hard on Saturday but could not slow down the Indians speedy backfield.
“We had a hard time keeping up with their outside run,” Giants coach Brian Jones said.
Jones said overall the season has been a success and that the kids have come a long way.
“Each kid on our team has gotten better,” Jones said. “The bigger picture for us is that we practice wanting our kids to want others to do well. They clap when they see others do well at practice … When you see a kid get that lesson that’s when it feels really good.”
The Indians jumped out to a 6-0 lead as quarterback Jaquan Cobb scored on a 3-yard touchdown run in the first.
Behind the running of David Vincent, the Giants responded and tied the game up at six when Vincent ripped off a 38-yard TD run.
Playing on a muddy field, both teams had issues with ball security, but the Indians were able to hold on long enough to score right before the end of the first half.
Chocowinity recovered a Giants fumble at its own 20 and proceeded to march down field. The Indians completed the scoring drive when Davion Carter scored from five yards out. Cobb scored the two-point conversion to put the Indians up 14-6 at halftime.
In the second half, the Indians took a 22-6 lead when Joshua Langley rumbled his way down field for an 18-yard touchdown and Cobb scored the two-point conversion.
“(Cobb, Langley and Carter) have been with us now for three years and they’re great kids,” Godley said. “I couldn’t ask for a better group in the backfield.”
The Giants fought to the end and were able to cut the deficit to 22-12 when Sam Jones scored on a QB keeper with 4:12 remaining. However, the Giants would not get any closer.
