The Pam Pack senior swimmers dove into their home pool for the final time in a competitive high school meet on Thursday and surfaced winners, the men edging Croatan by just 12 points and the women winning by a comfortable 65 point margin.

“Right now, the seniors are kind of bitter sweet because this is their last home meet, but we’ll get back in the water next week and get things focused and we’ll be ready for regionals,” said Head Coach Spenser Pake.

It was a big day for the Washington relay teams, as the boys swept all three events and the girls picked up wins in the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay.

Freshman Megan Baldwin, who has swam like a veteran senior this season, dominated the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:25.06, beating the next closest swimmer, East Carteret’s Cricket Carwin, by a commanding 15 second margin. Baldwin picked up another seven points for the Pam Pack later into the meet when she recorded a time of 1:12.62 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The dynamic fraternal duo of Eric and Tony Lovenberg stole the show for the men, as they usually do. Eric led the boys 200-yard freestyle from his dive to when he touched the cement wall, edging Croatan’s David Lewandowski by 17 second with a time of 1:57.21. Eric also squeaked out a win in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.72.

Tony also picked up two individual wins on the day. In the 200-yard individual medley, he finished with a time of 2:13.77 and in the grueling 500-yard freestyle, Tony won be a ridiculous 30 second margin with a time of 5:27.31.

Freshman Amy Arnold won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 28.47 and Freshman Lanie Godley picked up another seven points for the Pam Pack, recording a time of 1:10.84 in the 100-yard butterfly.

The 1A/2A East Regional Championship is scheduled for Feb. 1. Pake believes his team should have about 20 athletes swimming.

“We’ve got a lot of swimmers with qualifying times, it’s just a matter of if they’re fast enough to make the meet,” said Pake. “We’ll know Monday. I’m really hoping we have a real good showing this year.”
