The Farm Estate and Success Planning workshop scheduled for this past Friday has been moved to Feb.17 because of inclement winter weather that left most of Beaufort County shut down for several days last week.
The venue for the workshop has changed recent. Rod Gurganus, Beaufort County Cooperative Extension Service director, said the workshop would be held at the Cooperative Extension Service office in downtown Plymouth.
For farmers and heirs to be, the importance of knowing how to transfer property and assets is the purpose of the workshop, Gurganus said.
“The whole idea is that older farmers and younger farmers who are saying, ‘What am I going to do with all this?’ can learn how to pass down their assets and save a lot of money doing it,” Gurganus said.
The workshop will feature N.C. State Cooperative Extension speakers who will address current state and federal tax codes and also discuss what not to do.
“Sometimes, it can cost a lot depending on how you transfer property. You don’t want to make a lot of mistakes that are going to cost you and your heirs all the money in the world,” Gurganus said.
This workshop will also be hands-on, and farmers will be shown examples of how to transfer property and assets by using working farm models and reviewing case studies, he said.
“It will be more hands-on. They will give you an example of a working farm and how you would transfer property,” Gurganus said.
The workshop is an all-day event and begins 8:30 a.m. and goes to 3:30 p.m. There is no registration fee, but to ensure a spot, interested persons should call and register in advance. The registration is limited to 50 people. Lunch is also provided.
