Lady Raiders rout Lawrence in defensive showcase

The Lady Raiders left no shot uncontested on Thursday in a 40-21 defeat of in-conference foe Lawrence.
“I thought we played pretty good,” said Head Coach Melanie Sawyer. “I’m never satisfied as a coach, but it wasn’t bad effort from everybody. We got in foul trouble early, so we were hand tied a lot, but it wasn’t bad.”
Early on, tough zone defense, especially from Gibsen Armstrong and Taylor Mann in the paint, prevented the Warriors from scoring entirely in the first quarter.
Seniors Hannah Mutschler and Miranda Daughtry took care of the offensive, preventing turnovers by making smart passes and driving the lane. One senior day, Mutschler finished with seven points and Daughtry with eight.
“What a great senior group I’ve had,” Sawyer said. “Hannah, Alex [Payne] and Miranda, I’ve had for about six years, so it’s a tough loss for me. They’re great leaders and just all around good people, so it’s tough.”
As the seniors enjoyed their sendoff, Mann decided to take over offensively in the second half, draining a pair of three-pointers, the first of her season, and taking on the Warriors’ forwards down low. It was the first time this season Sawyer let her shoot from behind the arc. Mann would end with 16 points.
With a 34-12 lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Raiders dialed down the intensity to avoid fouling, but still walked away with a decisive victory.
