Ms. Mary Payne Fowle, age 85, a resident of the Waterford Place Apartments in Washington, died March 9, 2014 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital. A service celebrating her life will be held Monday March 24 at 10:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church in Washington, NC.  A reception will immediately follow.

Ms. Fowle, born in St. Louis, MO, was raised in Chattanooga, TN, the daughter of the late Reverend Dr. James L. and Katherine Fowle originally of Washington, NC. A 1947 graduate of Peace College, she was a social worker for the Chattanooga Tumor Clinic for most of her career. She also assisted her father in his ministry recording sermons, teaching bible studies, and accompanying him on outreach travels.

Ms. Fowle enjoyed summers with her dad, relatives, and friends at their log-cabin cottage, “JAMAKA”, which was located on River Road outside of Washington, NC.  She always spoke fondly of her time there, and would proudly remind all that the name derived from JAmes (her dad), MAry (herself), and KAtherine, her mother.

She will be long remembered for her kindness and sweet smile, and her love for animals. Ms. Fowle exuded a genuine warmth that made all feel special. Her soft heart for dogs led to the rescue of countless strays in Chattanooga and Washington.

A devout Christian and biblical scholar, Ms. Fowle never wavered in her love for Christ and her confidence that in death she was destined for a better place.

The family wishes to express its appreciation for the exceptional care provided by the staff of River Trace Nursing Home and the caring hands at Vidant Beaufort Hospital.

Memorial gifts may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 211 West 2nd St., Washington, NC  27889.
