Northside teams perform well at regional event

Northside High School had two teams compete at the North Carolina Science Olympiad Regional Tournament on Feb. 15 at East Carolina University in Greenville.
The NHS varsity team placed third among the 10 schools competing at the tournament by receiving six gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals in 23 competition events.
NHS Science Olympiad varsity division C award winners consisted of Nathaniel Bowen, first place in Boomilever and Scrambler; Christine Taylor and Rachel Lang, first place in Bottle Rocket and Write It, Do it; Danielle Woolard and Nathaniel Bowen, first place in Mystery Architecture; Christine Taylor and Alexis Keech, second place in Forensics; Danielle Woolard, third place in Rocks and Minerals.
The NHS junior varsity team won five gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal. Team members Emily Box and Rhea Woolard took first place in Astronomy; Cassidy Ploch and Gavin Sterrenberg placed first in Boomilever; Kody Jefferson and Rhea Woolard placed first in Bottle Rocket; Emily Box and Aleah Brinn took first place in Dynamic Planet; Brice Dickson and Kody Jefferson took first place in Elastic Laucher Glider; Mara Coltrain and Gavin Sterrenberg took first place in Forensics; Savannah Bunn and Kelsey Lang took second place in Material Science; Gavin Sterrenberg and Cassidy Ploch placed third in Mission Possible; Eliza Bowen and Aleah Brinn took third place in Water Quality.
The varsity teams will compete in the North Carolina Science Olympiad at North Carolina State University on April 24-25.
