Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge in Hyde County, North Carolina, is hosting an open house from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 20 at the Mattamuskeet High School to provide updates on the Refuge’s management of Lake Mattamuskeet and the canal system for waterfowl, fish, blue crab and other aquatic species as well as wildlife-dependent recreation. The high school is located at 20392 U.S. Highway 264 in Swanquarter.

The open house will be largely informal with presentations from 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on current infrastructure projects, fishery-related surveys, and water quality and quantity monitoring. Refuge Manager Pete Campbell, other representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and its partners will be available to answer questions.

This is a quarterly meeting to provide an opportunity for the public to learn and ask questions about the management of the lake. The open house follows the first meeting of the Lake Mattamuskeet Technical Working Group, which consists of state, federal, and academic biologists, as well as the Service’s regional hydrologist and a contaminant specialist. The purpose of the working group is to consider all available science and provide input on the management of Lake Mattamuskeet. Updates on that meeting will be provided at the open house.
