FROM THE HEART: Students at the Inner Banks Music Academy present a mini-recital to friends and family members at the academy’s studio.

The Inner Banks Music Academy Inc. recently presented a recital titled “Love is in the Air,” bringing piano and voice students’ performances within a love theme.

According to Neva Cashion, academy director, it was the third presentation since the academy’s opening in August 2013.

“I have vocalists and pianists, and sometime we have instruments such as guitar,” said Cashion. “I have one group who is like a show choir, and they sing and dance at the same time.”

The most recent love-themed performance was considered a mini-recital, in which students are divided into groups and perform in the presence of friends and family.

“We tried to make a lot of our songs, love songs, whether it’s a love gone right or a love gone wrong,” Cashion said.

Cashion asked the students to think about whom or what they loved and offered them the opportunity to dedicate their performances to a loved one.

“I try to make the recitals a little more personal, so I tell a little bit about the kids,” said Cashion.

She recalled the Christmas presentation performed by the academy, giving personal information about the students.

“I shared favorite Christmas memories (from the students),” Cashion said.

The upcoming recital, free and open to the public, is scheduled for May 31 at the Turnage Theater. This recital, themed around the Disney movie “Frozen,” is considered a formal presentation in which the academy’s entire membership will perform.

“The students are very excited about performing a medley of songs from “Frozen,” Cashion added.

In June, the academy will offer beginner piano and show-choir camps.
