OBIT VERDICK

Mr. Walter H. Verdick, 93, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014.

 

A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 11 am in the mausoleum at Pinewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the service.

 

Mr. Verdick grew up in New Rochelle, New York and was a graduate of New Rochelle High School. As a young adult, he worked as a roller skate instructor, lifeguard, photographer and musician. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific as an airplane mechanic. After the service he moved to Larchmont, NY, where he was employed with Sichorski Aeronautics. He later became a motorcycle police officer along with his father, retiring as Sergeant with 25 years of service. Mr. Verdick also was a ham radio operator, enjoyed metal sculpturing, and working as a gunsmith.

 

After his retirement from the Police Department, he moved to North Carolina and began painting and continued as a gunsmith. He also volunteered at the Vidant Medical Center Print Shop and Emergency Communications. He was the former Commander in Chief of the VFW in Greenville.

 

He is survived by his: son, Walter G. Verdick of Mahopac, NY; daughter, Janet L. Young of Phoenix, AZ; stepson, William Davidson of Long Island, NY; fiancé, Anna Woolard of Washington, NC; granddaughter, Luisa M. Verdick; and two step-grandchildren.
