Singers, musicians, dancers and even a comedienne will be among the headlining acts Saturday afternoon on the Turnage Theater stage.
All will be auditioning for a spot in the finals of East Carolina Star Search, a fundraising event for Eagle’s Wings food pantry.
“We’ve got several acts that have performed before, and others who are just beginning,” said Debbie Adams, interim executive director of Eagle’s Wings. Adams and Janet Cox are co-directing the event and will serve as emcees of Saturday’s show.
“There’s a lot of excitement going on,” Adams said. “We’re getting a lot of last minute entry forms, and while we’d rather have them in advance we’ll accept them at the door.”
To compete, each act makes a $100 donation to Eagle’s Wings. That donation may be in the form of sponsorship monies from family, friends, churches, civic organizations and area businesses.
Audience tickets for Saturday’s auditions are $12 each and may be purchased in advance at Russell’s Mens Shop in downtown Washington, Le Moulin Rouge de Danse, Eagle’s Wings and the Washington-Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce.
Tickets may also be purchased at the door Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m. as space permits. The curtain goes up on the show at 2 p.m., according to Adams.
Fifteen acts will be chosen by a panel of three judges to move on to the East Carolina Star Search finals, scheduled for June 7. During the finals, a grand prize winner and recipient of $1,000 cash will be named. Second place will receive $500 and the third place act will be awarded $250.
The cash awards are donated by Lee Chevrolet and F. Ray Moore Propane, according to Adams. Jessie Curry of Wilson Jones & Company PA will tabulate the competition scores.
