JACK CHERRY, JR.

Feb. 21, 1926 – April 19, 2014

 

Mr. Jack Cherry, Jr., 88, a resident of Florence, SC passed away on Saturday April 19, 2014, after a short illness.

Funeral services will be Wednesday April 23, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Florence, SC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington.

“Papa Jack” as he was lovingly called by his family and friends was born in Washington, NC to the late Annabelle and Jack Cherry on February 21, 1926.

Jack graduated from Washington High School where he excelled in basketball. He was a graduate of North Carolina State University (Raleigh NC) in Civil Engineering. He was an Army Air Corps veteran from World War II. He was employed by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (currently CSX) for 35 years and retired in 1985 as an executive in Tampa, Fla.

He is survived by his wife Maree P. Cherry, his sister Grace Sprott, children Jack (Pamela) Cherry III, Kathy Jamison and Edwin (Angela) Cherry, grandchildren Stephanie (Tom) Chelednik, Jennifer (Bryan) Knauss, Jacquelyn (Mike) Atkinson, Robert Cherry, and Katelin Cherry.  He has seven great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends especially Jules Hesse.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Jessie W. Cherry and grandson Matthew Cherry.

Memorials may be sent to the Central United Methodist Church (Florence, S.C.) or McLeod Hospice House (Florence, S.C.).
