Later this summer, the Dick Jones Field near John Cotten Tayloe Elementary School and the Todd Maxwell Complex is going to receive a facility facelift, while other city parks could see upgrades possibly in 2015.

Visitors to Jones Field should begin seeing work done in mid to late August. The construction will be done on the dugouts that were damaged by a storm in 2012. After the storm, the roofs were damaged on the dugouts and were deemed unusable by the city for games.

The cost for City of Washington to rebuild the dugouts at Jones Field is going to be $7,400. The money is going to come out of the general fund, said Brian Alligood, Washington city manager.

The park upgrades this summer also include the Todd Maxwell Complex. The city is going to work on the concession stand and restrooms, which is also coming out of the general fund.

“The upgrades are good and of course when you start spending money people don’t always understand it’s something that you’re either going to do it now or later,” said William Pitt, Washington city councilman. “I would like to have seen it done earlier, but it will be ready for next season.”

The city is also looking for grants to help offset the cost of the park upgrades at Havens Gardens and possibly Beebe Memorial Park, according to Pitt.

The park Pitt would like to use the possible grant money on is Havens Gardens.

“Havens Gardens is our oldest park and is our most used,” Pitt said. “It is in need of a facelift. There are some grant fundings out there, but they are a little bit further out and so they probably won’t be available this year.”

Havens Gardens offers a fishing pier, an activity area for sports, a picnic area and is one of the only parks with access to the water.

“We want to improve the general look of it (Havens Gardens),” Pitt said. “We want to replace some playground equipment and repair the bulkhead. We also want to work on the bridge that is under N.C. Highway 32, which keeps our citizens safe and not walking onto the road way.”

Beebe Memorial Park, near the Washington Boys and Girls Club of Beaufort County recently underwent improvements with the addition of a walkway and a sign. But according to Pitt, the residence in the neighborhood would like to see more park activity.
