Road construction season upon us

Now that the warm weather descended, the North Carolina Department of Transportation road crews will be out in full force.

In Beaufort County, the N.C. Highway 1001/Cherry Run Road Bridge over Aggie Run will be closed from May 27 at 8:30 a.m. until Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. The road will be closed in both directions.

“After the holiday weekend, we’re going to be replacing the bridge with a new one,” said Woody Jarvis, NCDOT district engineer. “We’re raising the level of the bridge about three feet and it will be above flood stage.”

Construction will go daily Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., and there is expected to be high traffic congestion, an NCDOT release said.

NCDOT needs to do the repairs on Cherry Run Road Bridge after several recent storms had flooded the road, and Jarvis said, “condition wise it was time to replace it.”

The bridge will continue to be closed until both lanes of traffic are done in September, according to Jarvis.

Several bridges are going to be under construction this season throughout Beaufort County. A list of all projects can be found at www.ncdot.gov.

“It’s more of a long term bridge replacement program to try and make sure we have safe bridges over bodies of water,” said Jarvis.

Jarvis said, Cherry Run Road Bridge is going to cost the state nearly $900,000 to repair.
