On June 2, at approximately 6:30 p.m. Greenville police officers were dispatched to the Bells Fork area in reference to a possible stabbing.
Within a few minutes, dispatchers received a second call that the victim was driving a car on West Fire Tower Road, heading toward S. Memorial Drive. Officers were able to get the victim, 57-year-old Rudolph Whitehurst, to pull over in a parking lot near the intersection of Fire Tower Road and Memorial Drive.
Whitehurst told officers he had been traveling on Fire Tower Road near Corey Road when a white male driving a Nissan Altima passed him on the left and then veered back to the right, cutting his vehicle off the road. The two cars continued to travel along Fire Tower Road. Whitehurst stated he attempted to make a U-turn in a parking lot near the intersection of 14th Street and Fire Tower Road. When he approached a stop sign, he said the driver of the Nissan Altima exited his vehicle. Whitehurst stated he also exited his vehicle, at which point the suspect confronted him and cut him several times with a knife. Both parties left the scene, with the victim eventually calling the police department.
Witnesses were able to provide officers with a detailed description of the suspect’s car, including the license plate number. The car was traced back to a Harold Van Stanley, 68, of Vanceboro.
Detectives with the Greenville Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Bureau quickly made contact with Mr. Stanley, who turned himself into the Greenville Police Department around 10 p.m.
Stanley has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He was booked in the Pitt County Detention Center under a $25,000 bond.
Whitehurst was transported to Vidant Medical Center for serious but non-life threatening injuries.
