Law enforcement was led on a chase through Washington Friday night in pursuit of a man suspected of dealing of cocaine. The multi-agency chase ended in the arrest of Shawn Duane Hogan, 41.

Around 7 p.m., investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office drug unit attempted to stop Hogan, who they said had sold cocaine in a series of controlled buys by the unit. Hogan initially stopped, but sped off again, this time with law enforcement in pursuit, according to a press release from the drug unit.

At speeds as high as 65 mph, and as low as 10 mph, Hogan took pursuers around Washington via West 15th Street, Carolina Avenue, John Small Avenue and various small side streets in between, said a spokesman for the drug unit. According to witnesses, Hogan was seen at times driving with his hands on his head, as if he was surrendering.

“Several times during the chase, there were times where Hogan was putting his hands on his head or out the window, but he continued to drive. There were multiple times that he gave the impression he was going to stop but would drive off again,” the spokesman said.

The suspect was allegedly throwing cocaine out the windows of his 2000 Lincoln Continental as he sped through town, including throwing a rock of cocaine into oncoming traffic by Walmart — a rock that hit another vehicle’s windshield and burst into pieces, the spokesman said.

Washington police officers, sheriff’s office patrol deputies and North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers helped secure the items thrown from Hogan’s vehicle, as three drug unit vehicles gave chase.

“It was extremely helpful to have those agencies around to assist, most notably to retrieve the cocaine he threw out the window—so it didn’t end up in the hands of kids,” the spokesman said.

The chase finally came to an end at Makin’ Tracks gas station at the corner of East Fifth and North Market streets, where Hogan surrendered, as his vehicle rolled into one of the pursuing vehicles because the gear shift had not been set in park, the spokesman said.

Hogan was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, felony flee to elude, injury to personal property and possession of drug paraphernalia. Investigators were able to recover approximately 20 grams of cocaine, the spokesman said. Hogan’s vehicle is subject to the “Run and You’re Done” law, in which a vehicle can be confiscated and auctioned off.
