During Monday’s Washington City Council meeting, members appointed local residents to sit on community boards and commissions.

City Council members appointed 22 Washington residents, 12 of which had served their respective positions before. The positions are on volunteer basis and appointments are between a two and five-year term.

The residents selected to the positions are required to attend regular meetings, all of which are open to the public.

“People can expect to make decisions on some things going on in the city, especially in the historic preservation,” said John Rodman Washington, director of planning and development. “They may have to make some decisions that might not be popular.”

The longest appointment is the Washington Housing Authority, a five-year term that runs until June 30, 2019.

William Pitt, who is the liaison for the Washington electric utilities advisory commission and human relations council, helped choose the residents who would sit on the boards.

“It’s always good when people want to step up and be a part of the community,” Pitt said. “I would like to see more of the citizens be a part of the boards.

“I want to thank those who were on the boards and those who are new.”

Washington City Council appointed the following people to boards and commissions: Planning Board, Jane Alligood and D. Howell Miller; enlarged Planning Board, Rawls Howard; Board of Adjustments, F. Susan Murrell; enlarged Board of Adjustments, Steve Fuchs; Board of Library Trustees, Ray Midgett; Recreation Advisory Committee, Carl W.
