Washington City Council will revisit the idea of installing moveable speed bumps in downtown Washington. In April, City Council members posed the idea of installing moveable speed bumps on some city streets.

At Monday’s City Council meeting, Doug Mercer Washington councilman brought up the subject again.

The city has looked into the purchase and is basing its ideas on what Greenville has done in its Uptown area. Mercer has asked Brian Alligood, Washington city manager to research what other cities are doing, along with Greenville.

According to Alligood, the city has not selected any specific cities to review yet. Council wants to continue to see what kind of impact selective enforcement efforts have.

Washington Police Chief Stacy Drakeford went before City Council to inform them what the police are doing to curtail speeding.

Drakeford told council, police have been proactive and have seen slower speeds in Washington. He also told City Council that officers are employing new strategies to halt speeders.

“We have increased traffic enforcement, especially in residential areas in which we have received complaints,” Drakeford said.

One of the places where Washington has slowed traffic down was on Repess Street, where the speed limit has been lowered from 35 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour.

“We came up with a plan and the plan has worked,” said Mac Hodges, Washington mayor. “The police have put a car parked on the street to show drivers that they are watching and it has slowed traffic down.”

The City Council will discuss the moveable speed bumps again in three months and determine if they will install them or table the idea.

“The first time it was brought up we thought they were six times more expensive than they were,” Hodges said. “Greenville spent between $2,000 and $3,000 on their moveable speed bumps.”

According to a moveable speed bump online retailer, costs vary between $49.50 and $925, depending on the size.

“Until we can’t handle a traffic situation we won’t buy the moveable speed bumps,” Hodges said. “If we can’t handle it then we’ll probably look into buying them.”
