The North Carolina Baptist Men will sponsor a free dental care clinic at the First Baptist Church in Washington on June 24 from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The dentist will offer cleanings, fillings and tooth extractions to individuals who don’t have insurance, courtesy of the mobile Dental Bus Ministry.
“The North Carolina Baptist Men supply two mobile dental units to churches in North Carolina that want to sponsor free dental clinics,” Honeycutt said. “We have two purposes and that is to meet the physical needs but the other is to share the love of Jesus Christ.”
The North Carolina Baptist Men representatives say they looking to provide care to the people who are financially unable to go to the dentist.
“Our services on the bus are limited to your basic cleanings, fillings and tooth extractions,” Joanne Honeycutt, medical/dental bus coordinator said. “We try to eliminate the pain. We’re not able to carry the full-array of dental services.”
In order for The First Baptist Church to bring the bus to Washington, they had to find local dentists from the city who want to volunteer their time, according to Honeycutt.
“We don’t send any dentist or dental assistants, we just send the bus and the bus driver,” Honeycutt said.
The Dental Bus Ministry began in 1989 after a member of the N.C. Baptist Men saw a similar practice in Florida. The N.C. Baptist Men’s Dental Bus sees nearly 4,000 people annually.
“The demand for our mobile units it tremendous,” Honeycutt said.
Over the last two decades, the N.C. Baptist Men’s Dental Bus has seen mobile units upgrade with three with new buses, according to Honeycutt.
