City Council to hold final fiscal year meeting

Monday’s Washington City Council meeting is the final one of the 2013-2014 fiscal year. The city is scheduled to discuss projects that are carrying over to the new budget, the old City Hall offer and new computer technology in the library and the Municipal Building.
When the fiscal year ends, the City of Washington tries to complete most, if not all, of the projects so there is no carry-over into the next budget. One project that is carrying over is the new restroom construction for the Todd Maxwell Complex restrooms.
“We try and not do a lot of carry-forward into the next budget,” said Brian Alligood, Washington’s city manager. “We like to close out the project and be done with it. If we know it will be a multi-year project we’ll call it a project ordinance and that sits out on its own.”
New Information Technology items were put on hold by the city, which will put them in carry-over category, as well. City staff is installing virtualization for its computers in the Municipal Building and library, which means the city’s computers in the library and Municipal Building will begin running off of one server, according Alligood.
“We purposely put the IT stuff on hold because we wanted to look at some different things,” Alligood said. “We didn’t want to rush it.”
On Monday’s agenda, the City Council will decide to accept or reject a local man’s offer of $20,100 to purchase old City Hall.
City Council’s agenda will include future and current updates at Warren Field Airport. Council will discuss the new terminal building, and new runway lights, which are funded by grants from the North Carolina Department of Transportation Division of Aviation.
